Dr. Lyle Oberg
Minister of Learning
Province of Alberta, Canada
Dr. Oberg graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1983 from the
Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He was
first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1993 for the
constituency of Bow Valley. In October of 1995, he was
appointed Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Health
Restructuring.
In March of 1997, Dr. Oberg was re-elected in the constituency
of Strathmore-Brooks, and served as Minister of Family
and Social Services from March 26th – 1997 to May
26, 1999. During this time he oversaw the move of children’s
services and services for persons with developmental disabilities
to community-based delivery. He launched a western Canadian
initiative to address Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and played
a key role in introducing the Protection of Children Involved
in Prostitution Act.
On May 26th, 1999, he was sworn in as Minister of Learning.
In March 2001, Dr. Oberg was re-elected to the Alberta
Legislature, continuing in his role as Minister of Learning.
He was also appointed as a member of the Treasury Board.
Prior to entering Provincial politics, Dr. Oberg served
as a School Board Trustee. As a Minister, he has championed
the importance of lifelong learning and works to assure
that our learning system is flexible, responsive and accountable.
